What Information Should You Have Before You Consult Your Doctor?

A little preparation before your doctor’s appointment can make the consultation more effective and help your doctor understand your problem better.

Before you visit, try to have the following information ready:

  • Your main problem: What is troubling you, when it started, and whether it is getting better or worse.

  • Symptoms: Note important symptoms such as pain, swelling, weakness, numbness, fever, stiffness, or difficulty in movement.

  • Previous medical records: Bring relevant X-rays, MRI/CT scans, blood reports, prescriptions, discharge summaries, and previous consultation notes.

  • Current medicines: Make a list of all medicines, supplements, and injections you are currently taking, including their doses if possible.

  • Past medical history: Inform your doctor about previous illnesses, surgeries, injuries, allergies, and any long-term medical conditions.

  • Previous treatment: Mention what treatment you have already taken and whether it helped.

  • Relevant family history: Some conditions can run in families, so mention any important family history when relevant.

  • Questions you want to ask: Write down your main concerns beforehand so that you don't forget them during the consultation.

One simple tip: Don't rely only on your memory. Keep your important medical reports and medication list together and carry them to your appointment.

A well-prepared patient can help the doctor make a more accurate diagnosis and a better treatment plan.
